Guided Kayak Tours: Smoke Wagon Water Taxi has both rental and guided tour options for kayaking - we recommend taking a guided tour if you have no experience in a kayak.

A typical day kayaking begins at the Smoke Wagon office at 8:45 am where you will be briefed on your day's adventure. The boat leaves at 9:00 a.m. and the water taxi ride across the bay takes about 25 minutes. Have your cameras ready because you never know what you'll see along the way. Across the bay is where your true adventure begins. The setting is nothing less than spectacular, replete with beautiful views of the surrounding Kenai mountains and some of the world's richest inter-tidal zones where urchins, octopus, shrimp, crab, salmon, otters, sea anemones and porpoises flourish.

Before setting out, your guides will give you an orientation to basic kayaking skills and equipment use. They will make sure you are comfortable with your kayaking abilities by providing instruction and explaining safety procedures carefully. The fiberglass kayaks that you will be paddling have wide beams for stability with a sleek design for smooth paddling.

Your guided adventure will take you through islands and inlets where sea birds, otters, porpoises and whales play. You will quietly interact with the marine environment while paddling through protected coves. Throughout the day there will be plenty of opportunities to photograph marine wildlife and the surrounding area. At 4:30 your water taxi picks you up to take you back to the Homer Spit. The trip is an unforgettable, safe, educational and enriching marine experience. The total package costs $145 including the water taxi fare.
Kayak Rentals: Smoke Wagon rents double and single kayaks. All rentals include the following: a kayak, a personal flotation device, a paddle and leash, a sponge, a bilge pump, and a paddle float. If you are just interested in renting a kayak without a water taxi ride the rate is $50 for a single and $70 for a double. We also offer a kayak rental/water taxi package. You can get one single kayak for one day with a one person round trip water taxi ride, or a double kayak for a day and a two person round trip water taxi ride. If you are planning a multiple day trip, we offer a discount on the kayak rentals. Call or email for specifics and pricing.
There are lots of great places to kayak in Kachemak Bay. Halibut cove, Tutka Bay, Jakalof Bay, and Sadie Cove are among the good kayak destinations. However, each area is unique and there are always lots of variables involved with the ocean and weather, so please allow Smoke Wagon Water Taxi to help you plan your trip.
